Containers have a weight limit
- In GTS, chests, barrels, sacks and other containers can only hold so much weight. It's always on from the start of a new game; there's no menu to switch it.
- The limit counts for every container, the ones in your own house included. The only storage left out is in Caranthir Tower, where GTS takes every container off the list.
- Dead bodies have a limit too: a body holds up to that person's or creature's own carry weight.
- Living people aren't affected by it. Your followers, and anyone else alive whose inventory you open, are left to the game's own rules.
- While a container is open, the top of its list shows how full it is, as what's inside against what it can hold.
How much each container holds
- What a container holds depends on what it looks like, not where it is. Every container of the same kind holds the same.
- A satchel holds 10 and a strongbox 25. Small sacks hold 25, larger sacks 50 to 75, and burial urns 50.
- End tables and night tables hold 100. Barrels, dressers, wardrobes, cupboards, safes and coffins hold 125.
- An ordinary chest holds 200. The biggest, such as noble chests, large ruin chests and Dwemer chests, hold 225.
- Containers from Beyond Skyrim's Cyrodiil follow the same scale: Ayleid chests 150 to 200, goblin chests 175, boss chests 225.
- GTS adds one container to the list: Lost Grimoire's bound chest holds 200.
- Any container not on the list holds 100.
What happens when a container is full
- If what you put in would go over the limit, a box pops up saying it won't fit and the extra goes straight back into your pack.
- With a stack, as many as fit stay in the container and only the rest come back to you.
- Taking things out is never blocked, and it frees up room straight away.
- The count goes by each item's own weight times how many, so weightless items never fill a container.
- A container that already holds more than its limit when you open it won't take anything more from you. Anything of the same kind already inside comes back to you as well.
What you can carry yourself
- Survival Mode, which is on from the start of a new GTS game, takes 100 off how much you can carry. Setting
- If you switch Survival off, that penalty goes away again.
- Each time you put a level-up into Stamina, you can carry 5 more.
- Carrying too much under Survival drains your Stamina by 2 points a second.
- It also makes you tire four times as fast.
- Under Survival, arrows and lockpicks count towards your load. That's Survival Control Panel's default, and GTS's setup leaves it alone. Setting
- Carrying too much doesn't stop a carriage: the driver lifts your limit just for the ride. The Wait Carriage in Inns ride does the same.
- A ferry, though, won't set off while you're carrying too much.
Backpacks
- A backpack is the main way to carry more. Every backpack in GTS adds 50 to your carry weight, except the Dark Leather Backpack, which adds 60.
- Backpacks weigh you down in other ways: most take 15 off both your Magicka and your Stamina. The plain Leather Backpack takes 10 off each.
- The Mage Backpack only takes 15 Stamina and the Adventurer Backpack only 15 Magicka.
- Some backpacks give a small extra: the Fine Leather Backpack 10 Speech, the Winter Fur Backpack 10 frost resistance, the Thief Backpack 10 Sneak and the Hunter Backpack 10 Archery.
- Campfire's fur backpacks that carry a Divine's emblem add a small bonus tied to that god on top, such as 5 extra Health for Arkay's.
- You can only wear one backpack at a time: they all use the same slot.
- The Creation Club backpacks weigh 2 each and Campfire's fur backpacks 3.
Other ways to carry more
- The Steed Stone adds 100 to your carry weight.
- The Security perk Deep Pockets adds 50 once you have Golden Touch and 40 Security. Its second rank, at 80 Security, adds another 50.
- A few starting traits change it: Pack Mule adds 75, Dwemer Researcher adds 25, and Nimble Acrobat takes off 50.
- The Lone Wolf trait adds 50 while you travel with no followers, and takes 50 away when you have company.
- Choosing Story Mode at the Balance Gear when you start adds 100 to your carry weight. Default Experience adds nothing. Setting
- Fortify Carry Weight potions help for a while: an Elixir of Strength adds 100 for 5 minutes. Ingredients such as Giant's Toe and Hawk Beak carry the effect for brewing.
- Clothing and jewellery can be enchanted with Fortify Carry Weight too.
- In the three winter months, Evening Star, Morning Star and Sun's Dawn, GTS lets you carry 10 more, unless you're a vampire, werewolf, werebear or lich.
- The Ease Burden spell adds 50 to your carry weight for two minutes.
Followers, horses and pack animals
- Followers have a carry weight of their own. When you open a living follower's inventory to trade, the top of the list shows their name and how full they are.
- You can also ask a follower what they're good at to see their stats, carry weight among them.
- While Lydia follows you, you can carry 30 more.
- Your horse has its own inventory. With Horse Whistle Key, look at your horse (or ride it) and press H to open it; sneaking while you press it renames the horse instead. Setting
- Dynamic Activation Key's add-on can open your horse's inventory when you activate it with Left Shift held, but GTS ships that option switched off. Setting
- The Creation Club pets Hilda the goat and Skritch the skeever can wear an Animal Pack, which lets them carry 40 more.
- The bone wolf pet is set to carry 70 once it's yours, and the armoured Dwemer mudcrab pet 20.
- Once you finish Xelzaz's quest Beast of Burden, his guar works as a pack animal: activating it opens its inventory.
Settings
- Container limits have no menu. They live in a list file that GTS ships, so changing them means editing that file. Setting
- Survival's carry weight penalty can be turned off in Survival Mode Improved's ini; base GTS leaves it on. Setting
- Whether arrows and lockpicks weigh anything can be set in Survival Control Panel's menu; by default it follows Survival Mode. Setting
- Story Mode's extra 100 comes from the Balance Gear choice at the start, not from a menu. Setting
- The horse inventory keys are menu settings: Horse Whistle Key's call key (default H) and Dynamic Activation Key's key (default Left Shift). Its Horse Inventory option is off as GTS ships it. Setting
- GTS's own setup at character creation doesn't touch any of these carry or container settings.
From base GTS 118's own files: the records as the game uses them, the mods' own settings files as Jay's collection ships them, and GTS's own menu setup. Each line was read by one reader and checked by a second. A line marked Setting is a menu or settings-file option: what it says is the default. Your own add-ons can change any of this.
