What it is and whether it's on
- Sleep in GTS runs through Survival Mode, which starts by itself on a new game. While it runs, tiredness and the rested bonuses are handled by Survival Mode Improved rather than by the old vanilla rules. Setting
- If you ever switch Survival Mode off, the vanilla sleep rules come back: the old rested bonuses return and tiredness stops counting.
- Several other mods hook into sleeping on top of Survival: a chance to shake off disease, dreams, sleepwalking on Solstheim, ambushes, body changes, grumpy NPCs and the spouse bonus from some follower mods. Each is covered below.
Where you can sleep
- What you sleep on doesn't change how rested you get. A bed, a bedroll or a tent all clear tiredness at the same speed and give the same bonus; what counts is where you are and who is with you. The one exception is a vampire's coffin (see below).
- Inns and your own homes give the better bonus, Well Rested. Anywhere else, outdoors or in a dungeon, gives plain Rested.
- Out in the wild, sleeping at a Camping kit camp built with the lean-to Shelter also counts as Well Rested. That is the default; if Camping Expansion's menu is set to build the small Nordic tent instead, the camp gives plain Rested. Setting
- Campfire tents work like a bed: using one opens the sleep menu. Sleeping in a tent you pitched yourself (not a conjured one) also moves your Camping skill along, once per in-game day.
- You can nap in a chair or on a bench: look at it and use the Dynamic Activation Key, and a Sleep choice appears. A nap is capped at 3 hours.
- Vampires who sleep in a coffin wake with Vampiric Rest for 12 hours: the Well Rested learning boost, and spells and enchantments cost 10% less.
How tiredness builds
- Tiredness normally climbs by 10 points every game hour you're awake, waiting included, up to a cap of 578.
- Fast travel tires you at a quarter of the normal rate. Time spent talking to someone, in beast form or flying on a dragon doesn't add any tiredness.
- The stages, with tiredness points: under 80 you can carry a rested bonus; 80 Refreshed; 160 Slightly Tired; 240 Tired; 360 Weary; 480 Debilitated. From a full night's sleep that's about 8 hours to Refreshed, a day to Tired and two days to Debilitated.
- Being tired slows your learning: skills improve 10% slower when Tired, 25% when Weary and 50% when Debilitated.
- Tiredness also eats into your maximum Magicka once you pass 160 points, growing steadily: roughly a fifth gone at Tired, half at Weary, three quarters at Debilitated, and all of it at the cap. Setting
- Staying Debilitated never brings on the Addled affliction in GTS: Survival Mode Improved only rolls for it when you already have it, so tiredness alone never gives it to you.
- Carrying too much makes you tire four times as fast.
- Some races tire more slowly: Orcs by 15%, High, Dark and Wood Elves by 10%. Werewolves (anyone carrying lycanthropy) tire at half speed, and vampires at the normal rate; for either, that replaces the racial bonus rather than adding to it.
- The Endurance perk Hardened Body (Survival skills) slows how fast you tire by 10% per rank, 20% at its second rank.
What sleeping gives you
- Each hour asleep takes 50 points off your tiredness. A cut-short sleep counts only the hours that actually passed. From Debilitated you need between 8 and 10 hours to get back under 80, depending on how far gone you are.
- Survival only gives you a rested bonus if the sleep brought your tiredness under 80. The bonus lasts until tiredness climbs back to 80: about 8 hours awake at the normal rate, longer if you tire more slowly.
- With Survival Mode on, you level up by sleeping: the level-up only happens when you rest, not the moment you earn it. Setting
- Every time you wake up there's a 1 in 4 chance that you shake off your diseases, even if the sleep was cut short.
- Sleep doesn't heal wounds any faster in GTS: they heal as in-game time passes, so a night's sleep counts towards that just as waiting does.
- Your body shape can change overnight (Pumping Iron): training you've done shows up as added body weight when you sleep, 0.1 points per hour you chose to sleep and at most 1 point a night, and only if it's been more than half a day since your last sleep. With no training behind you, every sleep takes a little weight off instead.
The rested bonuses and their numbers
- Rested: skills improve 5% faster. Well Rested: 10% faster. Lover's Comfort: 15% faster.
- Lover's Comfort replaces the others when you sleep in the same place as a spouse you married the game's own way.
- Some followers in GTS give Lover's Comfort themselves when you wake near them: Val Serano or Kaidan once you've married them, and Auri once you're together. Their bonus comes however tired you still are, and lasts until your tiredness next changes stage.
- The Endurance perk Repose raises them: Rested becomes 15% and Well Rested 20%. Lover's Comfort stays at 15%.
- If your adopted child is in the same place when you wake, you also get Mother's Love or Father's Love for 8 hours: spells and potions that restore Health work 25% better. This comes after any sleep, however tired you still are.
- Anyone with lycanthropy never gets Rested or Well Rested from Survival, wherever they sleep: a good sleep leaves them Refreshed instead. Lover's Comfort from Val Serano or Kaidan as a spouse still comes through.
Waiting
- Waiting is not resting: tiredness keeps building while you wait, and only real sleep brings it down.
- Hunger and cold build at half speed over the time you spend asleep, but at the full rate while you wait.
Risks and things that can go wrong
- After you sleep or wait there's a small chance something has found you: a few creatures or enemies suited to the area turn up nearby, with a warning box. Towns, cities, villages and other lived-in places are safe, and so are places you've cleared.
- A nap in a chair wipes any rested bonus you had, and if you actually dozed off you wake with Back Pain: 50 less Stamina for 2 hours.
- On Solstheim, before a certain point in the Dragonborn story, your first sleep in a town building or out in the open sends you sleepwalking to work on a Standing Stone; after that it's a 1 in 3 chance each time. In GTS you walk to the stone of the settlement you're sleeping in, or the nearest one, rather than a random one.
- With Solstheim without Miraak in GTS, that sleepwalking only happens during one stretch of its story: from a later stage of the temple's rebuilding until the mind control is lifted.
- The first time you sleep on a new day you may dream (Dragonborn Dreams). Dreams follow your quests and leave a temporary effect, and some of them take your rested bonus away. The quest dreams are on by default; Dragonborn Dreams' menu can switch them off. Setting
- Sleeping at the Windpeak Inn in Dawnstar before the Waking Nightmare quest is done usually gives you Dawnstar's Woes instead of your rested bonus.
- People you wake up let you know about it: sleeping NPCs answer with a tired or annoyed line instead of their usual greeting.
- Getting into and out of beds and bedrolls uses new animations, with quicker scrambles out of bed if a fight breaks out.
How it gets on with other systems
- In jail and in Oblivion your needs are paused, tiredness included.
- Vampires still get tired in GTS, at the normal rate. Liches and other races that need nothing don't. Setting
- Blade and Blunt can ease its injuries when you sleep, but those injuries are switched off in GTS, so nothing comes of it.
Settings
- Ambushes after sleeping or waiting: Extended Encounters' menu sets the chance for each. The mod's own default is 10%; GTS's setup lowers both to 5%. Setting
- Levelling up only through sleep: Survival Control Panel's menu has a switch for it, left at Default (on while Survival Mode is on). GTS's setup only touches that menu's HUD option, not this one. Setting
- Survival Mode starting by itself and vampires getting tired are both ini settings of Survival Mode Improved, on as base GTS ships it. GTS ships no copy of that ini of its own. Setting
From base GTS 118's own files: the records as the game uses them, the mods' own settings files as Jay's collection ships them, and GTS's own menu setup. Each line was read by one reader and checked by a second. A line marked Setting is a menu or settings-file option: what it says is the default. Your own add-ons can change any of this.
